Design of the Business Model
While benchmarking in part against the US model, the founders needed to incorporate physician services into care delivery given the limitations associated with nurses’ prescription rights. Hence the next step was to create an IT platform that had three dimensions: (1) a decision support software tool to diagnose patients, maintain quality and track visits, (2) to link nurses to physicians, (3) to enable remote prescribing by physicians. They spent a significant amount of time on market research to evaluate whether they should buy or rent the software from a third party or build customized Laastari-specific software. Öhman explained the trade-offs:
“External vendors often do not have the specific subject knowledge expertise required to contribute to a customized product such as Laastari. In addition, non-proprietary software creates too much bargaining power for developers and it can make it expensive to redefine processes or incorporate improvements in the later stages, as incentives are not always aligned. On the flip side, outsourcing this function would ease the burden of investing time and hiring the right team of coders and developers, thus allowing us to focus on other aspects of the business. That said, owning our software offered greater flexibility with respect to design changes and resource management.”
